Tax Free or Debt Free Weekend

Too much of a good deal is what gets most of us in financial trouble. But if you are smart you can save some money on products that you were going to purchase anyway.

Here is Texas we will be able to purchase certain products and not get taxed at the counter. The purchase must be made within August 21-23, 2009.

The products that will not be taxed are the following:

• Clothing and footwear that is under $100
• Backpacks under $100 for elementary and secondary students
• Includes items on layaway

Keep in mind that Texas is not the only state participating in tax-free weekends. Check the government site for dates when other states will have their weekend.

Caution to those who plan to pay for back-to-school clothes and items with a credit card. I understand that there are some people that have every intention of paying with a credit card as they shop this weekend.
Remember to shop with a plan. People who shop without a plan spend more than those who do. Clothing is a big deal around this time because of how quick children grow out of clothes so make a listing on how many pair of jeans you need to buy and how many tops.

Shopping for you is an option if you don’t have children and need some clothes. But I must say if you buy clothes on credit just to save a few tax dollars and end up paying 17%-22% you are not taking advantage of this weekend, the weekend is taking advantage of you.

Pay cash for back-to-school items and don’t end up getting taxed by credit card companies. Enjoy your tax free weekend debt free.

  1. Tax-free weekends, why do government wait until the last weekend of the summer to make it tax free? Why not start 2-3 weeks earlier since people would like to prepare a bit ahead of time. You can save a bit of money but you will be in for a big rush.
