$185 Bank Error Found in my Checking Account

Do you still write checks? My wife and I still write checks, it’s minimal, but we do. There are some expenses that require us to pay with a check and at times we owe a friend or family member for something they purchased for us and so we write them a check to cover amount due.

Well, the only problem with writing a check is that you have no idea what happens when it gets deposited into somebody else’s account. 

Take my example, I wrote a check for $15 and didn’t think about it. Then while doing my taxes and preparing the e-file documents this weekend I noticed that there was a check that was deposited in the amount of $200. This amount was out of the ordinary in relation to the amount that I usually write checks for so I investigated. As it turns out that this was a banking error that took place with the bank that handled the final transaction. The good thing is that now we can see the front of the check online and it clearly was an error on behalf of the bank.

I made a claim to my bank, yes Bank of America, and they credited my account within three days. Now I don’t think it was Bank of America’s fault but I’m sure they will go after their money. My bank has been good with these kinds of bank errors.

Too much is dependent on the consumer to figure out what the bank is doing. I mean I make so many purchases with my debit card that I don’t even realize how fast I’m spending the money. This is why I have made it a point to sit down and login online and go through purchases that I have made in the last couple weeks from the time I check. For one you can see your spending habit and you can see if there is an error that stands out.

This habit may mean money back in your pocket that was yours to begin with. That was the case for me; I received my $185 back. I should’ve charged them interest, lol. I’m just glad that I found that bank error when I did, that was money thrown away all because some teller typed in a wrong number.
